Mariam completed her Bachelor of Speech Pathology at La Trobe University, graduating in 2003. She is a member of Speech Pathology Australia and participates in the Professional Self-Regulation program. Mariam joined the Speech Results team in August 2015.
Mariam began her clinical experience by working in the field of Complex Communication Needs & Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with school aged children and adults. She then took this experience and diverged into Early Intervention, specialising her skills for the last 10 years at Specialist Children’s Services and at the Royal Children’s Hospital Early Intervention program, Uncle Bob’s Child Development Centre. Over this time, Mariam has collaborated with teams of professionals to work with preschool children who have a range of developmental disabilities and delays, learning difficulties and complex communication needs, including children with autism spectrum disorders, global developmental delay & language delays, Cerebral Palsy, complex and high medical needs and sensory processing difficulties. She is trained in Hanen It Takes Two to Talk and the Parent Child Mother Goose Program. She also has a special interest and wealth of experience in working with children who have complex feeding difficulties, including fussy eaters and tube feeders, and has completed both the Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Feeding and the SOS Approach to Feeding Workshop.
Mariam is a sensitive therapist, who naturally engages with children and provides motivating activities to support the development of their learning, language, social skills and communication through play. She strongly advocates the importance of family participation in the child’s development, both in clinic sessions and most importantly in the family home. Mariam endeavours to equip families with the knowledge, tools and strategies to progress their child’s learning of language and communication within their natural environment and daily life and also to help families be better engaged with and cued into their child’s communication strengths as well as their needs.
